Role Conflict and Role Strain
Notes:
A role is the behavior associated with a status. A role set is the roles associated with a
single status. See the chart on p. 143 in the text for a visual diagram of the relationships
between status and role.
Conflict is incompatibility among roles corresponding to two or more statues.
The classic example is the pull between family and career.
Strain is incompatibility among roles within a single status. The classic example here may be the
supervisor who also attempts to be friendly with his/her employees.
