Post Modern Society:. The Information Age
Postmodernity- cultural traits of a post modern information-based society
Notes:
While critical theorists doubt the benefits of modernity and of
post modern structures, the citizens of a new electronic age do
not all bask in consumerism and people do appear to be, in some
cases, critical of technology while embracing its potentialities.
The Information Age can be liberating for those with access to
and knowledge of information technologies. For example, students
at California State University Dominguez Hills partake in and
create reality and criticize it at Dear Habermas:
Habermas believed that positive change was/is possible.
Among his objectives was to show that knowledge is based upon
and influenced by our social experiences. Culture does not exist
independent of the knowers and creators of culture and knowledge
cannot exist without a social context. As subjects approach an act, an object, an idea, they bring with them a priori fields of perception. Objectivity in the sciences and social sciences Habermas perceives to be a gross exaggeration and limitation precluding reflexive thought. An ideology of positivism prevents self reflection and limits the power of doubt. Habermas considers the ultimate ends of society to be liberation, autonomy, an end to injustice and oppression.
